Othen than Len Mattiace, who was born and raised on Long Island before moving to Florida with his family as a teenager, it looks like no Long Islander has a shot at making the U.S. Open from the sectional qualifier at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J.

Jim Hazen of Miller Place right now seems to have come the closest. He finished 36 holes 3 over par. That's three shots off a tie for one of two alternate spots, at least as it stands at the moment. Mattiace is in that group.

Four golfers finished under par.  The best score was by Blaine Peffley of Lebanon, Pa., a Hooters Tour  player who occasionally plays on the Nationwide Tour. He shot 6 under par through 36 holes.
