Mike Gilmore, the affable head pro at Piping Rock, has left for maybe the only job it would make sense to leave Piping Rock for. He's now the head pro at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck.

Winged Foot has repeatedly been a U.S. Open site, most recently in 2006--a memorable tournament in which Tiger Woods missed the cut and Phil Mickelson blew the lead on the final hole and said, "I am such an idiot." The club has had a history of well known and highly respected head pros, notably Long Islander Tom Nieporte, who ran the pro shop for 28 years after having worked 15 years at Piping Rock.

Gilmore is a solid player who qualified for the U.S. Open two years ago. He has the stature and teaching ability to handle a job that ranks as one of the handful of top club pro positions in the country, if not the No. 1 job.
