Phil Mickelson stole the show at Torrey Pines. Not a bad season debut, although I thought he would make a better run on Sunday. Stil, he did shed light on the square grooves controversy and the conundrum resulting from Ping Eye2's grandfather clause.

Good job by San Francisco Chronicle to get Scott McCarron on record, calling Phil a cheater. McCarron, to his credit, didn't back down and didn't say he was misquoted or taken out of context. I think McCarron is more frustrated about the rule than by Phil. It's just telling that Mickelson was the flashpoint.

The whole thing sure did take the wind out of John Daly's spontaneous retirement. I like what somone said on Golf Channel, "Nobody ever really retires from golf."

At least it was something to talk about during Tiger Woods' exile.
