Jim Liu of Smithtown burnished his international reputation and probably enhanced his chances of making the U.S. Walker Cup team with a strong performance in the British Amateur last week at Royal Cinque Ports in Kent, England. Liu reached the semifinals and lost on the 19th hole of his match against Englishman Garrick Porteous, who went on to win the title. The Walker Cup will be held Sept. 7-8 at National Golf Links of America in Southampton.
The semifinal finish qualified Liu for the U.S. Amateur this August.
