Another one from the "Who the heck is that guy?" Department:

Unknown Jeff Brehaut, a 46-year-old from Mountain View, Calif., was atop the leaderboard early with a score of 1-under par through nine holes.

For Brehaut, this isn't his first experience being near the top of the leaderboard -- he actually finished tied for 17th in his only other U.S. Open appearance in 2007.

Brehaut hasn't played on the PGA Tour since 2007, and won entry into this year's Open at the Rockville, Md. qualifier. He's played the past two years on the Nationwide Tour, golf's equivalent of a Triple-A minor league.

After bogeying his first hole (the 10th), Brehaut birdied 13 and 17 to drop to minus-1 for the day. It's still very early, but it will be fun to see if he can keep it up.
