Matz, who was drafted in the second round No. 72 overall by the Mets, won the Carl Yastrzemski Award, presented annually to the outstanding baseball player in Suffolk County. Matz helped lead Ward Melville to its first league title in 35 years. The 6-3, 192-pound lefthander went 6-1, allowed two earned runs and 14 hits in 54 innings and struck out 74. He batted .408 and signed to play at Coastal Carolina.
