Matt Demitroff set state record for stolen bases

Manhasset’s Matt Demitroff set the state record for career stolen bases with a steal of second base in the third inning today  in a 6-5 loss to Mineola in Nassau Conference A-II baseball. Demitroff has 134 stolen bases in five years and moved pass Brenden Myers, who had 133 stolen bases for S.S. Seward from 2002-06. Demitroff will play at Boston College. Demitroff came into the day with 133 stolen bases. He has been on varsity since eighth grade when he stole 13 bases. He had 27 in 2007, 35 in 2008 and 36 last season as a junior.

"He combines terrific running speed with instincts," former Manhasset coach Rich Hess said. Hess coached Demitroff the last four years. "When he's on base, he makes good things happen."
