Of course, by now you know that No. 4 Carey defeated No. 2 MacArthur, 3-0, to advance to the Long Island Championship. You know, also,...

Previewing second round matchups in Nassau baseball

It's high school sports, so let's do some homework.

I'll warn you ahead of time: the preview is pretty comprehensive, so rather than reading 1,000-plus words of me talking about teams you don't care about, notice that all the schools are bolded so you can jump around to whatever interests you. Why? Because I care.

This is the Class A baseball playoff bracket. Why yes, it is ridiculously complicated. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is where I come in. Bust out your flowcharts!

Class A, as opposed to AA and B, works on a pseudo-double elimination format. So, to quote many an old school hip hop song, let's break it down.

FIRST ROUND -

I'm a 1-to-8 seed! Congratulations! To borrow another line...

Calhoun stuns MacArthur

It appeared Game 3 was just about a lock. MacArthur dropped Game 1, but led 7-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning and had lefthander Josh Barry and his 0.89 ERA on the mound.

But Calhoun rallied with an eight-run inning to win the Nassau Class AA championship. No. 2 Calhoun swept the best-of-three series and won the championship for the first time since 2002.

"We...

Division-Island Trees suspended

No lead has been safe in the Island Trees-Division matchups this season. It will take 22 hours to find out if a three-run edge in the seventh inning will be enough to send Division to the Nassau County baseball championship series.

With host No. 3 Division leading 8-5 today in the deciding Game 3 of the Class A semifinals, the game was suspended because of lightning. George Balsamo was at...
