When Pierson/Bridgehampton stepped on the diamond Wednesday at Dutchess County Stadium in Wappinger Falls, the pain of last year was a distant memory. Sure, the Whalers' 2012 season ended in the same game -- the Class C regional final and against the same team, Haldane, but coach Jonathan Tortorella's team would hear none of it.
"It's a new season and a new team," Tortorella said. "We knew what we were walking into. We had to play well to move on. And we did."
A 5-4 victory kept Pierson/Bridgehampton's season alive. They will play Seton Catholic Saturday at 10 a.m. at Broome Community College in the Class C semifinal.
After Pierson/Bridgehampton took a 4-0 lead in the third inning, Haldane fought back to tie it in the bottom of the fifth. The tie didn't last long. Tim Markowski's sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth drove in Colman Vila. Vila had led off the inning with a walk.
Jake Bennett earned the win, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and walking one over five innings. "He was confident," Tortorella said. "He threw strikes, trusted his defense, and gave us a shot to win."
Vila pitched 12/3 innings, earning the save.
