Jake Laine pitches Syosset to 1-0 playoff win

Jake Laine pitched a two-hitter with no walks and seven strikeouts as seventh-seeded Syosset topped No. 10 Farmingdale, 1-0, in a Nassau Class AA first-round baseball playoff game Monday. Steven Sessa drove in Alex Perry with a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the fourth for Syosset, which will face No. 3 Carey in a best-of-three quarterfinal Tuesday.

Island Trees 5, Floral Park 4: Rocco Privitera's fielder's choice in the top of the eighth scored Louis Mele with the go-ahead run as No. 15 Island Trees (13-7) overcame a 4-0 deficit in a Class A play-in game. Tucker Hahn drew a bases-loaded walk on a 3-and-2 pitch in the fourth to tie the score at 4 for Island Trees. Aaron Rosenthal allowed six hits, struck out nine and didn't allow an earned run in a complete game.


Plainedge 13, New Hyde Park 9: Aarin Hartenstein had a grand slam and a two-run single as No. 1 Plainedge (12-5) overcame an 8-2 deficit in a Nassau Class A quarterfinal. Kate Finnen went 3-for-4 with a two-run triple for Plainedge, which hosts No. 5 Bethpage in Game 1 of a best-of-three semifinal series, beginning Tuesday.

Bethpage 5, Wantagh 3: Kate Dorney had two hits, including a two-run single in the top of the fifth to give No. 5 Bethpage a 2-0 lead in a Nassau Class A quarterfinal. Kayla Hatki had three hits, including a three-run double in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 5-0. Hatki struck out eight, allowed six hits and walked two in the win.


Hewlett 8, Jericho 6: Jimmy Anderson scored with 10:31 left in the fourth period to give No. 4 Hewlett (9-7) a 7-3 lead in a Nassau Class B first-round playoff game. Justin Isaacs had 13 saves and Gianluca Vadaro and Zach Richman had three goals each for Hewlett, which takes on No. 1 Garden City in a quarterfinal Thursday at 6:30 at Hofstra.

North Shore 9, South Side 8: Dan Grabher (five goals, one assist) scored with 1:16 left to to give No. 3 North Shore (11-5) a 9-7 lead in a Class B first-round game. North Shore will face No. 2 Wantagh in a quarterfinal Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Hofstra. GIRLS LACROSSE

South Side 13, Floral Park 8: Michaela Lynch had five goals and three assists and Liz Hoeffner had three goals and two assists for No. 6 South Side (13-3) in the first round of the Nassau Class B playoffs. South Side will play at No. 3 Wantagh in a quarterfinal Thursday.BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Holy Trinity 3, St. Anthony's 2: James Fulton had 17 kills, five blocks and 12 digs, and Brendan Meyer had 18 kills and 11 digs for No. 4 Holy Trinity in a 28-26, 11-25, 22-25, 25-16, 28-26 win in a CHSAA quarterfinal. Holy Trinity will play No. 1 Kellenberg Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Adelphi. BOYS TENNIS

Glen Cove 4, Hicksville 3:Braddock Chow defeated Michael Fong, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, in first singles to lead No. 3 Glen Cove (9-4) over No. 2 Hicksville in a Nassau Conference A-III quarterfinal. Glen Cove (9-4) plays at No. 1 Wantagh in a semifinal Wednesday at 4:30.
