Big 10: Sachem East holds top spot with win over Garden City

Highlights of Sachem East's 1-0 victory over Garden City on Oct. 8, 2012.

FALL BIG 10

1. SACHEM EAST FIELD HOCKEY

The defending Class A state champs are still undefeated and continue to roll. The Flaming Arrows also have Long Island bragging rights after beating Garden City, 1-0. Cara Trombetta scored in the first half and Sachem East's defense made it hold up.

2. LAWRENCE FOOTBALL

Junior Joe Capobianco threw for three touchdowns and ran one in as Lawrence defeated Manhasset, 55-7, in a Nassau Conference III game. The Golden Tornadoes have scored 262 points, an average of 52 per game, through a 5-0 start.

3. BRENTWOOD BOYS SOCCER

The Indians faced two tough opponents and came away with 1-0 wins over Ward Melville and Commack. Johnathan Interiano scored against Ward Melville and assisted Kevin Diaz in the Commack game. Brentwood has outscored opponents 37-3 and is ranked fourth in the country by the NSCAA.

4. ST. ANTHONY'S BOYS SOCCER

The Friars (7-1-1) defeated St. Mary's, 7-1 and then lost, 1-0, to DeMatha (Md.), which is ranked No. 2 in the country by the NSCAA.

5. SAYVILLE FOOTBALL

Senior halfback John Haggart had 147 yards and two touchdown on only eight carries as the Golden Flashes extended Long Island's longest win streak to 17 with a 35-7 win over Comsewogue.

6. MILLER PLACE GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Tiana Guevara, Talia Guevara and Laura Nolan all tied for first in Miller Place's 17-38 win over Glenn in Suffolk League VII. The trio has finished in the top three in every dual meet since September of last year, according to coach Fran Sullivan. The Panthers are 3-0.

7. MASSAPEQUA BOYS VOLLEYBALL

The Chiefs (7-0) swept Syosset and Uniondale to remain unbeaten and still have not lost a set this season.

8. JERICHO BADMINTON

They are 8-0 after a 6-1 win over Great Neck North last week. The closest match for Jericho was a 5-2 win over Great Neck South earlier in the season as they make their debut in the BIG 10.

9. GARDEN CITY FIELD HOCKEY

The Trojans suffered their first loss of the year -- and the first to a Long Island team since 2009 -- falling to Sachem East, 1-0. Nevertheless, Garden City has allowed just three goals this season and last week had 2-1 victories over North Shore and Ward Melville.

10. SYOSSET GIRLS TENNIS

Syosset has continued to dominate Nassau, picking up victories over Roslyn, Garden City, Manhasset and Hewlett.
