Comsewogue's James Thristino sets school single-season goals record
Comsewogue junior James Thristino broke the school's record for most goals scored in a single season last night when he scored his 27th in the first half of a League V game at home against Harborfields.
Yet because Comsewogue (9-3) lost, 2-1, Thristino was left with an awkward feeling.
"It's really great to have the record, but I wish we could have won but Harborfields played very well," he said. "They didn't man-mark me in the first game that we played but I was double-teamed after the first half yesterday."
Thristino said seniors on the team had informed him that Keith Vigorito had set the Comsewogue record in 2009 with 26 goals. Though his main focus has been more team-oriented, that of helping Comsewogue toward a deep playoff run, Thristino said he eyed the record since being informed of it.
"I wouldn't have stressed it no matter what, even if I knew of it," Thristino said. "I've been more focused on helping the team just win, really."
With playoffs starting next week, Comsewogue finished second in League V behind Sayville (12-0). Thristino had four hat-tricks during the regular season, and he also scored four goals in a game against Westhampton on Sept. 17.
Said Thristino, "What's meant the most to me was just having everyone at my school support and congratulate me."
