Connetquot swimming wins League II title

Connetquot’s girls swimming team is champion for the second time in four years.

The Thunderbirds finished undefeated in League II, 5-0, and competed against the best in the league on Friday in the League II swimming and diving championship in Deer Park.

Katherine Green finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.88 and Tiffany Catano finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:08 to lead Connetquot.

With the victory, Green and Catano both continued their journey towards qualifying for the state meet, and coach Alex Scichilone said he won’t be surprised if that goal is accomplished.

“They have led the way in practices and they motivate the team,” Scichilone said of his two standout swimmers. “They showed what they could do with their leadership.”

The Thunderbirds finished first in both the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay.

“The team did an absolutely amazing job from day one,” Scichilone said. “They were very focused. They worked to their full potential every day in practice.”

Eighth-grader Emma Kopp, finished first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.54.

“She is a young swimmer who has a lot of potential,” Scichilone said. “She has shown so much improvement this season. It’s going to be very exciting to work with her for the next four years.”

Nine swimmers will compete in the state qualifier meet November 9 at Suffolk Community College, and coach Scichilone has high expectations.

“Our goal is to place well in the county meet and send a few girls to the state meet,” Scichilone said. “We have a lot of talent on our team.”
