Female player wins first match at boys states
Quinn Gleason of Honeoye Falls-Lima High School (Section V, Genesee Valley) won her first-round match at the NYS Boys Tennis Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Thursday, to advance to the second round of the winner’s bracket.
Gleason is the only female player participating in the boys tournament this season.
She had competed on the girls tennis team at her school for five seasons, but this year asked her school district if she could play with the boys instead. She was granted permission to do so and finished second at the Section V singles tournament to qualify for the boys state championships.
In 2010, Gleason finished third at the girls state championships.
“The boys are definitely more mentally tough so I have to stay more focused, and they have bigger serves with more power,” Gleason said.
Gleason topped Keith Jensen from Binghamton in Thursday’s opening round, 6-1, 6-1. If she beats her second-round opponent, Gleason could face Friends Academy’s Andrew Yaraghi in the third round if Yaraghi also advances.
“It’s great to get one match under my belt and I’m looking forward to the next one,” Gleason said.
