Field Hockey: Trombetta to tour with Team USA
If the last four field hockey seasons have taught us anything, it's that Katie Trombetta is good with goals - scoring and achieving them. And this week brought another.
The Sachem East junior was selected to tour with USA Field Hockey’s junior national team this spring. Trombetta was among 18 girls from around the country named to the Under-17 travel team, which was announced earlier this week.
Trombetta, a midfielder, was named Newsday’s Player of the Year last season after leading Long Island in scoring with 40 points and Sachem East to a second consecutive Class A state championship. She also was named an All-American for the second time.
Team USA’s selection process began last July, when 102 of the nation’s best high school players competed in Junior National Camp tryouts at UMass. That group was whittled down, with the top performers receiving invites to a winter camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Ca. last month. From there, the top 18 were chosen for the travel team that will tour internationally this spring.
“I like traveling and seeing different things, that’s exciting,” said Trombetta, who committed to the University of Michigan in October. As for how far she hopes to go with field hockey: “Wherever it takes me.”
No official announcement has been made yet about where the team will travel and against whom it will compete, but the tour is expected to hit Europe.
Trombetta said last fall that she would give up basketball to focus more on field hockey and spend the winter training in preparation for this tryout. “I want to be in the best shape I can,” she said. The plan included hiring a trainer with the goal of improving, specifically, her upper-body strength and endurance.
Another objective met.
“My parents give everything to me,” Trombetta said of her motivation, “and a way to give back to them is trying to be a good student, good on the field, be a good person. And I also want to do it for myself; achieve everything I can and be the best I can be.”
I’ll skip the snappy kicker and end with this: #shegood
