HBO's 'Real Sports' to air episode on youth football concussions

HBO's "Real Sports" explores the impact of concussions on young football players as Purdue scientists examine what can happen to an athlete's brain after a season of football. Premieres Nov. 20, 2012.

HBO's documentary series "Real Sports" will air a special episode Tuesday at 10 p.m. on the effects of concussions on youth football players.

A group of researchers at Purdue University studied youth football players over the course of a season and saw that brain function steadily decreased as a player accrued more and more hits.

The NFL has recently taken an increased role in promoting safe tackling and avoiding concussions at all levels of the game. However, the national debate as to whether or not the overall safety of the sport continues to rage on.

Check out the above sneak peek from the episode, and be sure to catch the full episode Tuesday at 10 p.m. for an even deeper look into the effects of concussions on youth football players.
