New HBO documentary looks at parents of high school athletes

Peter Berg discusses parents’ obsession with their children’s athletic participation in a clip from "Trophy Kids," the premiere episode of HBO's new series "State of Play." It debuts Dec. 4 at 9 p.m. ET.

HBO Sports begins a new series produced by Peter Berg (who did TV's "Friday Night Lights") called "State of Play."

Its aim is to look at the complex themes of sports and their relationship to society as a whole.

The first episode debuts Dec. 4 (9 p.m. ET) and is called "Trophy Kids." It focuses on four parents and five children and examines how the two interact in high school and youth sports. It will be followed by a roundtable discussion with Berg, sports psychologist Larry Lauer and former NFL quarterback Todd Marinovich, whose father was overly ambitious in driving Todd to succeed in football.
