Kellenberg 4x800 relay team runs All-American time
The Kellenberg 4x800-meter relay team showed that you don’t necessarily have to run every weekend to turn in great times at big moments.
After racing a more scattered schedule this spring, the senior quartet of Jim McQuade, Randall Turner, James Malebranche and Dylan Murphy returned to form in the 4x800-relay at the New Balance Nationals, held this weekend at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro.
The Firebirds placed second in seven minutes, 41.96 seconds, good for All-American status. The time broke the old school record of 7:42.31, according to coach Robert York.
Malebranche led off, running a 1:58.5. Turner, the second leg, ran a 1:54.4. McQuade followed with a 1:59.5. Murphy, who will run at Duke in the fall, finished the race off with a 1:49.5 anchor leg.
The group spent the majority of the spring season focusing on speed in the 4x400 and running individual events, according to York. However, the 4x800 team did win at May’s Loucks Games, running a 7:49.08.
Smithtown West’s shuttle hurdle relay team also earned All-American status on Saturday. Adam Hymowitz, Thomas Modell, Devin Mirenda, and Dustin Wade finished sixth in 1:02.15.
On Friday, Westhampton’s Annica Penn won the one mile race walk national championship in 7:29.87. It was Penn’s second consecutive race walk national title.
