Bayport-Blue Point (22-0) entered Friday's Class A winners bracket semifinal against No. 4 Miller Place having allowed only seven runs in its last eight games.

This time, it was their bats and some timely relief pitching that did the work in a 12-7 win.

Mike Alliegro capped a four-run fourth inning with an RBI single for BBP that put them in front 9-2, a seemingly insurmountable deficit against a team that has kept opposing offenses at bay all season.

That was nearly not the case this time as Miller Place stormed back to make it 9-7 and had runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the fifth, threatening to tie the game.

That’s when P.J. Weeks came on in relief and induced a pop-out to first base to end the inning. Weeks went the rest of the way, finishing with 2-1/3 innings of no-hit relief and Alliegro added a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to provide the final margin.

Bayport-Blue Point will test itself against another League VI opponent on Wednesday when they face off against No. 3 Sayville.

“We’ve played two games with tough teams from League VI,” BBP head coach Jim Moccio said. “They played a really tough schedule and we’re looking forward to it.”
