Northport boys finish 11th at Nike Cross Nationals

Northport took its legs out west this weekend, running in the Nike Cross Nationals on Saturday at Portland Meadows Race Track in Oregon.

The Tigers finished 11th in the team competition, scoring 299 points. Junior Mike Brannigan was their highest individual finisher, running the 5K course in 15:40 – good for 44th. Tim McGowan was 50th in 15:46. Nick Termine finished 87th in 16:07. Jack McGowan clocked a 16:32. Justin Leopold finished in 16:42. Patrick Thall ran a 16:59. Roger Acosta made it across the line in 17:27.

Brannigan won the New York Race in 15:29.9 at the Nike Cross Regionals, held at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls on Nov. 30. Northport placed second at regionals, becoming the first boys team in Long Island history to qualify for the meet, coach Jason Strom said.

St. Anthony’s Patrick Tucker also made it to Portland. He finished in 16:30. Tucker qualified for the national meet by finishing ninth in 15:52.3 in the New York race at regionals.

There were 197 individual finishers and 22 teams in the boys race, according to official results.

Garden City’s Stephanie Gerland represented Long Island in the girls race, running a 18:31.6 – good for 56th.

Gerland qualified by finishing seventh in the New York Race at regionals in 18:39.2. Gerland has had an impressive end to her sophomore season. She finished sixth at the New York State Federation Championships in 18:45.3 at Bowdoin Park on Nov. 16. Gerland also placed seventh in 18:09.9 in the Class B race at the New York State Championships on Nov. 9 at Queensbury High School.
