Northport girls shine in first race of season
Northport made an early statement this weekend at the Villa Bears Running Classic at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The Tigers not only won the overall race, which featured schools from all over the state, but they also topped St. Anthony's, Sacred Heart and Kellenberg in the process.
"A win in the first race is always nice," coach Eric Visconti said. "St. Anthony's and Monroe Woodbury (Central Valley, N.Y.) are strong teams and will be top competitors in the state this season. While it was a great start, the team still has much to improve on."
Senior Brigid Brennan pulled the top LI finish, crossing the line in 15 minutes, 23.9 seconds.
"Brigid had a strong first race," Visconti said. "She has consistently been a top competitor in Suffolk and looks to have another fantastic season. With a strong summer of training, she is physically and mentally in a great place. She’s ready to shine."
Northport had three other finishers in the top 15.
"We have had a very deep team for the past several years," Visconti said. "This year looks to be no exception."
Jackie Thorne finished seventh overall in 15:37.4. Amelia Kuehn was ninth, running a 15:43.4. Rebecca Macleod rounded out the top 15 in 16:08.1.
St. Anthony's had three finishers in the top 20. Stephanie Leo was sixth in 15:29, Delaney Worth finished 10th in 15:46.2, and Shea Bohan finished 17th in 16.11.3. The Friars finished second with 95 points.
Other notable LI finishes in the top 20: Kellenberg's Jazmine Fray finished eighth in 15:38.8. Our Lady of Mercy's Tara Sweeney finished 11th in 15:53. Sacred Heart’s Paige Duca was 13th in 15:58.7. Our Lady of Mercy’s Charlotte Molloy finished 16th in 16:10.8.
