Recap: Jericho wins Class A State Championship
Live here at Middletown High School once again as Jericho (19-1-1) goes for it's second consecutive Class A state championship. To do so, the Jayhawks will have to get past Section I's Port Chester (19-1-2).
Jericho had a dominating performance in the semifinals, defeating Williamsville East 4-2. But there was one area of concern: this was the first time all year that the Jayhawks have allowed more than one goal in a game. The Jayhawks had 12 shutouts during the regular season, including a streak of 10 straight shutouts at one point. They also had three straight shutouts this postseason before yesterday's game. Let's see what kind of adjustments they make for today's game.
Port Chester needed overtime to get past Fowler, 2-1, in yesterday's semifinal game.
The game is set to start at 10:30. Stay tuned for updates.
The starting lineups have been introduced. The national anthem has played. And we've kicked off!
Less than two minutes in and Zach Cohen scores to give Jericho an early 1-0 lead! Cohen scored off a rebound after a free kick.
Clock stopped at 35:59 as junior midfielder Michael Blumberg, who's played great all year, is down. Looks like he got hit in the face. He'll sit out for a bit.
Back-to-back-to-back corner kicks net nothing for Port Chester. Cohen sends a good through ball to leading scorer Derek Medolla, but he was offsides.
Jericho gets another goal as Ajani Motta scores off a rebound. 2-0 Jayhawks with about 28 minutes to go in the first half.
Port Chester gets on the board as Bryan Suertegara scores off a corner from Alexis Valdovinos. 2-1 with a little over 25 minutes left.
Blumberg has returned for the Jayhawks and they need him. Port Chester gaining more possessions. 19:00 left in the half and it's still 2-1 Jericho.
Under 10 minutes to go in the half and the Jayhawks still lead, 2-1. The teams have been pretty even, but Port Chester definitely seems to have found new energy after its goal.
Wild sequence with about 5:00 left as Jericho goalie Ari Lewis comes out of the net to control the ball, but loses it, the ball bounces around the box a bunch of times and the Rams can't convert with an empty net. Jericho's defense has done a great job helping Lewis out in the back.
HALFTIME: Jericho leads 2-1.
Port Chester has played very well after its goal. The Rams have limited Jericho's opportunities on the offensive side and they've been putting a lot of pressure on the Jayhawks' defense. Lewis, playing his usual aggressive style, should be glad the score isn't different. Lewis came out of the net on two separate occasions and Jericho's defense did a great job both times not allowing the Rams to convert.
Eight minutes into the second half and the score hasn't changed. Possession has been fairly even early on.
Port Chester narrowly avoids an own-goal. Almost midway through the second half and Jericho still leads 2-1. The Jayhwaks have been playing better in the midfield and winning more possessions.
Game getting a little chippy as Jericho's Jonathan Amodio gets a yellow card. 18:30 left and Jericho still leads 2-1.
A little over 14:00 left and now a Port Chester player gets a yellow card. Emotions running high, but what else would you expect? It's the state championship! Jericho still leads 2-1.
Under eight minutes left and its desperation time for Port Chester. But Jericho's size and physicality has been too much for the Rams to handle. The Jayhawks still lead, 2-1.
Three minutes left and Jericho can almost taste it. Port Chester getting desperate.
Clock stopped at 2:30 for an injured Port Chester player.
Under two minutes left and the Jericho fans begin chanting, "I believe that we have won!"
Final: Jericho wins 2-1. The Jayhawks have won their second straight Class A State Championship.
