The wait is over for Sachem North’s Melissa Michels. The Flaming Arrows sprinter has committed to run at Northeastern University next fall, the school has announced.

Michels holds Sachem North records in the 55, 60, 100, and 200 meter dashes. Last season, she placed fourth in the high school 55 at the Millrose Games in 7.27 seconds, a school record at the time. She was the first Sachem sprinter to compete in the games, the school said.

Michels competed in the New York State meet in both her sophomore and junior season. As a junior, she finished sixth in the 55 in 7.26 seconds at the winter state meet. Her 7.25 second preliminary finish broke her own school record, the school said.

The sprinter's success has translated to the classroom as well. She is ranked 21st in her class and is a member of five academic honors societies. Upon graduation, she will have completed nine advanced placement courses. Michels has been named a N.Y. scholar-athlete in every season since she was a freshman, the school said.
