Sachem North wrestling tournament preview
Wrestling fans will get to see some of the top talent on the Island Friday and Saturday as 10 strong squads get together at Sachem North.
Here’s a look at some of the top wrestlers that will be competing.
Jesse Dellavecchia of East Islip and John Busiello of Eastport-South Manor are the second- and third- ranked wrestlers at 106 pounds. Dellavecchia is a tenth-grader who finished second at 99 pounds in League III last year and already has a victory against top 106-pound contender Chris Donnelly of Island Trees under his belt this year. Busiello is a highly regarded freshman who is looking to make a mark at 106 pounds.
T.J. Fabian of Shoreham-Wading River finished second in Suffolk at 120 pounds last year, barely losing the championship match to Matt Leshinger of Sayville before again falling to Leshinger in Albany. Before Fabian can look to avenge those losses, he’ll go up against tough competition all season. Eastport-South Manor’s Jimmy Leach is ranked fourth at 120 pounds and would be a stiff test for Fabian.
Steven Lee of West Babylon, last year’s League IV champ and Suffolk runner-up at 99 pounds, has been competing at 113 pounds and is one of the top overall wrestlers in the county.
Floyd also comes in boasting three of Suffolk’s top wrestlers at their respective weight classes. Tom Gerle is a tough competitor at 145 pounds and might have something to prove after a loss last week to Sachem East’s Jackson Mordente. Devin Doran is back at 195 pounds for Floyd after finishing third in Division I last season. He had a strong week against Sachem East and Minisink Valley and will look to build on that. Daniel Palminteri should also be in the mix at 170 pounds for Floyd this year.
