State preview: Harborfields in Class A girls hoops

Matchup: Harborfields (20-2) vs. Maine-Endwell

Game time: Friday, 1:30 p.m.

Harborfields started the season with relatively modest goals: win League V and contend for a Suffolk championship. They accomplished both, then went on to capture their first Long Island title since 2007.

They’ve since set their sights a little higher. Headed upstate now, coach Russ Tietjen said, “We might as well go win the whole thing.”

The Tornadoes have depth and size, including five girls over 5-10. They’re led by do-it-all point guard Bridgit Ryan along with versatile forwards Amy Werbitsky and Kristen Kelly, and quick guard Toni Deren.

Maine-Endwell, a young team, made a surprise run to its first state semifinal. Their go-to scorer is Julie Yacavoni, the team’s lone senior. But they’re an athletic group that utilizes a full-court press.

“We haven’t been able to find much more than video clips on [Maine-Endwell],” Tietjen said, “so we’ll be more concerned with executing and doing what we do.”

If they advance: Championship game is 7 p.m. Saturday vs. Troy or Pittsford-Mendon.
