Top boys soccer performers
Here’s the weekly installment of top Long Island boys soccer performers for the period of Sept. 24 -30:
Connor Gill, Commack: The junior scored the only goal during a win over Brentwood on Monday. He had three goals and an assist in a win against Floyd and had an assist in a 2-1 victory over Roslyn last week.
“He struggled a bit early because we put leadership responsibility on him, but he has taken to being a team leader and a force up top,” said Commack coach Dave Viegas. “Over the last week, the work ethic and skills have come together and he is playing with confidence.”
Nick Tulp, East Hampton: He leads Suffolk with nine shutouts, and had three last week. He had nine saves including a few from close-range on Saturday to preserve a scoreless tie in a non-league rematch of last year's Long Island Class A final against Jericho.
Justin Carfora, St. Anthony’s: His unassisted goal in the 67th minute was the winner for St. Anthony's in its 1-0 victory over Kellenberg.
Steven Cain, Farmingdale: He scored the winner with 15 seconds left off a cross from Brendan Wenzel, a defender, from about 20 yards out to lead Farmingdale to a 1-0 win over Hicksville in AA-2. Cain also added two assists in a AA-2 win on the road against East Meadow last week.
Dan Vitiello, Massapequa: The senior recorded three shutouts and made a combined 11 saves in wins over Oceanside, Uniondale and St. John the Baptist. Vitiello made a big breakaway save to help preserve the Chiefs’ road win over Uniondale.
Who we missed recently:
Manny Flory, Long Beach: He scored two goals and had two assists during a 4-2 victory over Mepham on Sept. 23. Two days later, he scored both Long Beach goals in a 2-2 tie against Elmont. His second goal tied the score with less than five minutes remaining.
