West Islip diver Patrick Carter qualifies for state championships
It’s early in the season, but West Islip’s freshman diver Patrick Carter has already qualified for the state championships. He qualified during the Sachem East Diving Invitational on Saturday with a score of 504.
“I’ve very excited for him,” coach Bob Kollar said. “He’s a hard worker and he came back this year even stronger than he was last year. His score was amazing and he qualified by over 80 points.”
Last year, Carter won the Suffolk County diving title with an 11-dive score of 451.25. With the season just underway, Carter seems to be following in the footsteps of his previous successes.
“He started when he was about eight years old and he loves it,” Patrick’s mother, Dixie, said. “We’re very proud of him.”
This will be Carter’s second year at the state championship. Last year, Carter received a 405 score in the boys 1-meter diving championship, finishing 17th.
Carter broke his wrist in June playing soccer, but is fully rehabilitated.
“I feel really good,” Carter said. “This was my first meet back since my injury and it was great.”
The young freshman gave credit to his coaches at West Islip, Kollar and KristiLee Hender, and his club coach, George Taylor.
“They’re all very supportive,” Carter said. “All of my coaches are great.”
Carter is looking forward to his second trip to states.
“I would love to get in the top eight and if I could make the top three it would be very cool,” Carter said.
And how far does Kollar think his talented young diver can go in the county this year?
“I’m anticipating he’s going to be the top diver in the county again,” Kollar said.
The state championships will be at Webster Schroeder High School in Webster, N.Y. from Friday, Feb. 28, 2014 to Saturday, March 1, 2014.
