Savanna Juengerkes helped her sister Vanessa in a big way during Islip’s League V/VI crossover softball game against Sayville on Monday at Wing Elementary School.
Already leading 2-0, courtesy of Leslie Aubel’s two-run base hit in the bottom of the second inning, Savanna delivered a grand slam in the third off junior lefthander Julia Simpson to break the game open.

Lindsay Montemarano, Seaford -- Nassau Player of the Week: Where to begin? The week started with Montemarano going 2-for-2 with an RBI and earning the win in an 8-5 victory over preseason favorite Island Trees. Things only got better from there. Ward Melville’s offense has been the story in 2013, but when they defeated Garden City, 7-3, on Saturday, the defense excelled led by goalie Daniel Nemirov’s eight saves. Ward Melville also dominated tough Smithtown West, 13-4, earlier in the week and is well deserving of our top spot in Suffolk. The Patriots moved up to No. 3 in the Inside Lacrosse national rankings, behind No. 1 Boys Latin and...

If you haven’t heard by now, St. John the Baptist had a dramatic, steak snappin’ 2-1 win over Kellenberg on Friday. It was a playoff atmosphere and also the best played game I’ve seen so far this season, on both sides. Couldn’t fit all of the postgame reaction in the story itself, so we’ll post it here for your viewing pleasure…

On the loss: “St. John’splayed...

Things have gone according to plan for 7-0 Kellenberg this season, even though the plan itself has changed almost daily. Firebirds’ boys volleyball coach John Heitner said he’s been able to “open up the playbook,” this season, thanks to his team’s talent-stacked roster that so far has lived up to high preseason expectations. “There was a lot of hype before the season, and we’re off to a fantastic...
