Athletes in orange high socks and the field hockey players with orange hair ribbons, and even orange programs were distributed at Port Washington on Wednesday.
Orange is not the Vikings’ usual team color.
But it was yesterday. Schreiber High School was among the seven institutes in the Port Washington district to participate in “Unity Day,” a nationwide campaign that seeks to raise awareness...Read more »
Our Lady of Mercy will hold their seventh annual Tower Run on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 9 a.m. at the school’s campus in Syosset. The 5K run is held in honor of Mary Jo Lorello, a former health teacher and coach in the athletic department who, despite being a non-smoker, died of lung cancer in July 2008, according to OLMA art teacher Chrissy Shelly.
The run, which began one year prior to Lorello’s...Read more »
I'm going with "Applause" as the title for these, at least for now. And, yes, it's a sutble reference to the song. But it works for this... I think. As always, hit me @StephenHaynes4 or via e-mail with any suggestions, nominations or random whatevers. And a sound salute to this week's POTWs.

When Kellenberg’s Emily O’Hara steps on the track, she’s competing in two races. One is the meet at hand – get to the front of the pack and stay there just long enough to cross the finish line with a hefty amount of points. The second is a race against her teammates – a race to make varsity.

Happy Birthday, Lindsay Bleistein!
She celebrated her 16th birthday on Tuesday by scoring the winner in overtime as Locust Valley upset Cold Spring Harbor, 1-0, in Nassau Conference I field hockey.

“We had beaten them a couple times when I first started...Read more »

First one up this season, and I haven't thought of a snappy title for these yet (like "Kick-Starters" for soccer). Promise, I'll have a good one for next week's Players of the Week. But any suggestions or requests, feel free to e-mail them or tweet me @StephenHaynes4.
And here we go...

To Smithtown girls swimming coach Terry Martin, it's not how you start, but how you finish. "What I talk to the girls about, it's not how well you're doing at the beginning of the season, it's how well you're doing at the end of the season," Martin said. "We're preparing for the end of the season." Half Hollow Hills coach Jason Wiedersum feels the same way. "What we have...Read more »
