Around the Diamond with Alex Caprariello

Welcome to another installment of Around the Diamond.  Each week we’ll sit down with a local high school softball player and ask her a series of questions…some that relate to softball, some that don’t, and some that may even be slightly embarrassing.

If you'd like to be featured, e-mail me at michael.gavin@newsday.com, or message me on Twitter at @mgavinjr, or just come talk to me at...

When Dan Grabher has his knees bent, his feet shoulder-width apart, his dominant right foot a few inches in front of his left one and his body low, he usually wins.

"It gives me that quick, one-second burst,” the North Shore senior said.

It’s a typical athletic stance he used during the winter, when grappling with opponents on a wrestling mat. In the spring, Grabher finds himself...

Let’s start things off right: Shoutout to Sayville’s Liz Koehler and Gina Palumbo, seniors who scored their first goals of the year on senior day. Way to be clutch (and make it memorable). Now, off to the races… Vanessa Costantino, West Islip – I wanna stick that extra ‘n’ in her last name every time. Ms. Costantino scored the winner with eight seconds left in the first OT in the Lions game win...

Katherine Zisis, Roslyn: In one of the more touching sports-related scenes you’ll see, Zisis, a senior with pulmonary stenosis and development disability, scored a goal in her first varsity appearance on Saturday. Zisis has been the Bulldogs’ manager for four years and, in Roslyn’s last home game this season, she was cleared...

When the Tewaaraton Award watch list was paired down to 25 last week, Duke attack Kerrin Maurer was stunned to see her name.
