Roosevelt begins football season as midnight riders

Roosevelt began its 50th football season in a most unusual way. The team’s first practice, as allowed by state rules, was on Monday, but instead of the traditional 8 a.m. start most schools on Long Island used, the Rough Riders started their session at 12:01 a.m. Let the Midnight Madness begin.

Brentwood ranked No. 23 in nation

Brentwood, the defending Long Island Class AA champion, returns this season ranked No. 23 in the Student Sports Fab 50 Fall Boys Soccer Preseason National Rankings, which were released on Aug. 12.

In their last 10 seasons, the Indians have seven undefeated league championships, eight county titles, seven Long Island titles, two state titles and one national title.

Roosevelt's Jones commits to Stony Brook

Roosevelt's Raymond Jones wins the boys' class I-A

Raymond Jones, a senior tight end/defensive end for Roosevelt, has made a verbal commitment to play college football at Stony Brook University, according to coach Joe Vito.

Jones, a first-team All-Nassau selection last season at defensive line, made 68 tackles and had 11 sacks for the Rough Riders, who won the county championship before losing to Babylon in the Class IV Long Island Championship.
