Zain Ali can't even remember exactly when he was introduced to the game of tennis. The Half Hollow Hills East senior and defending Suffolk County singles champion was practically born playing the sport.
"I've been playing since I was four or five," Ali said. "But I was always around the game, bouncing a tennis ball, just getting a feel for it."
Tennis is the game of choice in the Ali...Read more »
It was an early wake-up call for steeplechasers at the Knight-Time Invitational on Saturday at Uniondale.
Valley Stream South’s Michael Gordon won the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 10:20.05. Being that it was the first time he had run the event this season, Gordon didn’t have any big expectations. But, as so often happens in the unpredictable world of track and field, the race had other plans.

The Cold Spring Harbor boys tennis team has been in some high pressure matches before. The defending Nassau County champions have built themselves into a dynasty of sorts, having won five straight Long Island titles before being dethroned by Half Hollow Hills East last spring.
“We feel every match like there’s a target on our backs which can be tough,” head coach Ben Marks said. “Everyone...Read more »
Anthony Papa didn’t button his jacket when he went back into the dugout. He tossed to the same teammate and used the same ball.
His coach, Tom Tuttle, filled out his scorecard in exactly the same way every inning after the fifth, and didn't say a word about what was going on about 60 feet away from him.
And both of them kept it up...right up until Papa's Division teammates dogpiled him...Read more »
This season saw Mike Antipas take his turn as the face of the family fencing dynasty.
The Ward Melville junior won his second consecutive individual championship, finished a second straight unbeaten season, and was named Newsday’s Long Island Fencer of the Year, following in the footsteps of older sisters Demi and Alexa who also accomplished these feats during their careers.
“It feels...Read more »
And we’re back again. Twitter tells me there’s only seven more Mondays left in the school year (it seems some people are counting down the days until summer for whatever reason), so our hope is to make those Mondays a little more fun… or a little less difficult, however you wanna look at it.
There’s been a change this year. I’ll still be covering Nassau and the private schools – for the most...Read more »
Chasing championships and records is all Middle Country senior Kelly Skalacki has known in her bowling career, but no success was ever enough.
"I want to do better than I have before," the Newfield senior said. "There's a lot I have to improve on."
Skalacki said that after a junior season in which she helped Middle Country capture its first state championship, had the second best average...Read more »
JJ Foley is a defender for Smithtown West’s boys lacrosse team. He’s headed to Lehigh after he graduates in a couple of months. He’s really good at what he does.
It’s possible you didn’t know that, though. And that’s a shame.
Foley is often overlooked because of his own back-line teammates. Kyle Mathie is committed to North Carolina. Logan Greco, who is bound for Virginia, was a Newsday...Read more »
BOYSBen Bonhurst, Smithtown WestIt’ll be hard for anyone to top Bonhurst’s winter season, but the Florida State-bound shot putter is up for any challenge. Bonhurst, who won both the state and national titles and set the state record during the winter, is the defending state champ in the spring, throwing 61 feet, 11 inches last June.
Tim McGowan, NorthportMcGowan, who won the state championship...Read more »
