JJ Foley is a defender for Smithtown West’s boys lacrosse team. He’s headed to Lehigh after he graduates in a couple of months. He’s really good at what he does.
It’s possible you didn’t know that, though. And that’s a shame.
Foley is often overlooked because of his own back-line teammates. Kyle Mathie is committed to North Carolina. Logan Greco, who is bound for Virginia, was a Newsday...Read more »
BOYSBen Bonhurst, Smithtown WestIt’ll be hard for anyone to top Bonhurst’s winter season, but the Florida State-bound shot putter is up for any challenge. Bonhurst, who won both the state and national titles and set the state record during the winter, is the defending state champ in the spring, throwing 61 feet, 11 inches last June.
Tim McGowan, NorthportMcGowan, who won the state championship...Read more »

Somewhere, deep in a faraway corner of Miller Place, are images that would be hard to believe if seen. If uncovered, they would need to be examined and scanned for authenticity. Even then, there are many who still would refuse to believe they were real.
“They’re pictures of Tiana and I coming in dead last at field day,” Talia Guevara, half of Miller Place’s talented twins, said. “I was not...Read more »
Chaminade can feel it. They can see it. They can even taste it.
After winning both the cross country and winter track CHSAA intersectional championships, the Flyers are one season and one more intersectional title away from what would undoubtedly be their finest achievement — the triple crown.
Chaminade hasn’t won the most prestigious CHSAA title across all three seasons since the 1997-1998...Read more »
Chaminade standout midfielder Sam Bonafede was asked Friday afternoon, the day before the season opener against Ward Melville, who the Flyers' starting goalie would be.
He didn’t know for sure.
“It could be one of four guys,” Bonafede said. “But that’s because they’re all pretty good.”
Matt Isnardi proved how good he is on Saturday. The senior goalie, who was behind Dan Fowler...Read more »
Pat McCormick likes to call Brian Lang the “X-factor.”
"That's the best way to describe him," McCormick said of his new Hicksville lacrosse teammate. "He could do a lot on the field. That's why he's going to Ohio State. He could be one of the best middies in the conference this season, if not the county."
Several coaches from top teams in Nassau have said the same.
And Lang didn’t...Read more »
Brian Cannon wants to be remembered after this season as one of the best lacrosse players to graduate from Northport.
And there’s a specific way the senior attacker would like to achieve that.
“Northport has not won a county championship in a while,” Cannon said. “It’s all about helping the team get to that goal. And by doing well as a team, I think after that, my own individual success...Read more »
If James Sullivan is even half as good at racking up points as he is at taking faceoffs, Garden City might be in for another special season.
Actually, considering Sullivan’s mark of nearly 75 percent at the faceoff “X” last season, a shooting percentage of less than half of that would be fine, he said.
The junior, who has served as the team’s faceoff specialist since eighth grade, is...Read more »
It was a goal Matthew Cecchini will never forget -- ever.
After all, it put Manhasset in position to win its first state hockey title in the Mixed Open/Division.
“I was able to get a shot on net from the top of the circle, and to see it go in was an amazing feeling,'' said Cecchini, who scored 30 seconds into overtime to give the Indians a 7-6 state semifinal victory over Jamestown...Read more »
