Savanna Juengerkes helped her sister Vanessa in a big way during Islip’s League V/VI crossover softball game against Sayville on Monday at Wing Elementary School.
Already leading 2-0, courtesy of Leslie Aubel’s two-run base hit in the bottom of the second inning, Savanna delivered a grand slam in the third off junior lefthander Julia Simpson to break the game open.
A six-run lead at...Read more »
The Cougar 3200 isn’t an ordinary race. The signature event at the Cougar Invitational, held Saturday at Bellmore JFK High School, pits nine runners against each other. But the similarities to a regular 3200 end there. At the end of each lap, the last place runner is eliminated, setting up a one-on-one final lap between the two lone survivors. For runners, who can be creatures of habit, this is...Read more »

Lindsay Montemarano, Seaford -- Nassau Player of the Week: Where to begin? The week started with Montemarano going 2-for-2 with an RBI and earning the win in an 8-5 victory over preseason favorite Island Trees. Things only got better from there. In an 11-7 win over Glen Cove, she went 5-for-5 with six RBIs, including a key three-run home run in the seventh inning…oh, and she also...Read more »
Ward Melville’s offense has been the story in 2013, but when they defeated Garden City, 7-3, on Saturday, the defense excelled led by goalie Daniel Nemirov’s eight saves. Ward Melville also dominated tough Smithtown West, 13-4, earlier in the week and is well deserving of our top spot in Suffolk. The Patriots moved up to No. 3 in the Inside Lacrosse national rankings, behind No. 1 Boys Latin and...Read more »
Smithtown High School Athletic Director Pat Smith had important news to tell Smithtown West softball coach Dave Miller early Saturday morning, prior to the Bulls' League III/IV home crossover ball game against Copiague.
"He called to inform me that there was a leak in the roof of the baseball/softball storage room," Miller said. "All my equipment was damaged and he said they...Read more »
Welcome to another installment of Around the Diamond. Each week we’ll sit down with a local high school softball player and ask her a series of questions…some that relate to softball, some that don’t, and some that may even be slightly embarrassing.

If you haven’t heard by now, St. John the Baptist had a dramatic, steak snappin’ 2-1 win over Kellenberg on Friday. It was a playoff atmosphere and also the best played game I’ve seen so far this season, on both sides. Couldn’t fit all of the postgame reaction in the story itself, so we’ll post it here for your viewing pleasure…
KELLENBERG COACH KEN CONRADE
On the loss: “St. John’splayed...Read more »
Things have gone according to plan for 7-0 Kellenberg this season, even though the plan itself has changed almost daily. Firebirds’ boys volleyball coach John Heitner said he’s been able to “open up the playbook,” this season, thanks to his team’s talent-stacked roster that so far has lived up to high preseason expectations. “There was a lot of hype before the season, and we’re off to a fantastic...Read more »
