As you may well know, every week, Newsday nominates the athletes of the week for each sport and puts them on a full page in the Sunday high school section.

There's like 10 of them. It's kinda hard to get on the list. So, since it takes me forever to make the nominations and it's dead quiet at Newsday HQ (What up, Good Friday), I thought I'd spend the time giving some (web) ink to the best...

It was a wild league championship Sunday in Suffolk girls indoor track, with numerous teams revving up for a run at a county championship this weekend. Bay Shore looked as impressive as ever in winning League II, its 24th consecutive league title. The Marauders set two championship meet records, Anisa Toppin in the triple jump and Imani McGhee in the long jump. But they were hardly the only school...

The race for the League II title was tight last year was and if the early results this season are a harbinger of things to come, the Connetquot Thunderbirds will be neck-and-neck with Sachem North once again.

The Thunderbirds graduated three all-county wrestlers (including 145-pound champion and fourth-place New York State finisher Brendan Dent) but return a strong core that has been competing...

Drum roll, please!

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association named its All-Americans on Monday and this, likely, will come as no surprise: Katie Trombetta was selected. Again.

The Sachem East star received first-team All-American honors for a second straight year, a day after being named Newsday's Long Island Player of the Year, also for a second consecutive year.

"I just...

Commack had applied the brakes to one of the most potent offenses on Long Island for 48 minutes, but now it was overtime against top-seeded Sachem North and the road got a lot more treacherous.

The teams traded touchdowns and extra points on each of their first two OT possessions, ratcheting up the tension and the noise at rollicking Lake Ronkonkoma. But Commack finally turned the Flaming...

Here’s the weekly installment of top five Long Island boys soccer performers for the period of Sept. 9 -15.

This week, the list is dedicated to players who made an impact on offense and it includes the context of the games. For example, a game-winning goal in a game featuring two top-tier teams may weigh more than a three-goal game in a lopsided victory. Next week, we will put together a list...

In 2010, when Sachem North rolled up 421 points in 11 games, coach Dave Falco often referred to his backfield as “our three-headed monster.” For 2013, you can add one more.

This year’s Flaming Arrows, the No. 2 seed in Suffolk Division I behind defending Long Island champion Floyd, features a quartet of outstanding backs.

“Now, it’s really a four-headed monster,” Falco said of quarterback...
