As you may well know, every week, Newsday nominates the athletes of the week for each sport and puts them on a full page in the Sunday high school section.

Calhoun's Kayla Cappuzzo was named Gatorade New York girls soccer player of the year, the sports drink company announced Thursday.
The Northeastern-bound senior, Newsday's Nassau Player of the Year, finished with six goals and seven assists and helped lead Calhoun to the Class AA county championship game.

Taylor Calabrese can sense when Taylor Miller is going for a steal.

Four outbracket games kicked off the 2013 Nassau boys' soccer postseason Thursday, featuring Class A wins by Sewanhaka, Lynbrook, Floral Park and Clarke.
All opening round Class A games take place on Oct. 25, as top-seeded Wantagh hosts No. 16 Clarke at 2:30 p.m.
