Kyle Williams missed his first dunk attempt, got it back, and went back up for the flush.
What a way for St. John the Baptist’s 6-9 center to score his 1,000th point. It came on the first play of the game in the Cougars’ CHSAA showdown with Holy Trinity.
But it wasn’t the best part for Williams in St. John the Baptist’s 69-64 home win. The best part was protecting the paint.

While last season meant despair, dread and disappointment for the Westhampton boys basketball team, this season is all about dreams, delirium and Devonte Dixon.
Dixon, a transfer from Floyd, scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Westhampton Tuesday in its biggest League V victory in quite some time. With the win, Westhampton (6-4) clinched the playoffs for the first time since 2003,...Read more »
Great Neck South coach Josh Baravarian has set the bar high for both his boys and girls teams this season.
He wants both to win the county championship.
It is a lofty goal, sure, but not an unrealistic one, given the talent the Rebels have.
The boys finished the regular season with an 11-1 record and the girls finished at 9-3. The boys are also the defending county champions.

Sewanhaka District coach Katie Mosie said that back when she was on the high school gymnastics team in 2006, they maaaaay have beaten Plainview JFK once. Maybe.
"You should've seen our faces today when we won," Mosie said. "We were shocked...we had them check it again."
That's how hard it is to beat Plainview. Sewanhaka defeated Conference I's second place team Friday, 158.4-158.0,...Read more »
Earlier this season, Kellenberg boys basketball coach Jack McCutcheon asked Long Beach coach T.J. Burke how his team was doing.
The reason McCutcheon was reaching out to Burke was because the Marines had been through a lot with superstorm Sandy.
“I told him we got the gym back at Long Beach and we got new uniforms,” Burke said. “But that was about it.”
McCutcheon and the Firebirds...Read more »

Liam Walker is making a habit out of buzzer-beating shots. And that's been a good thing for the Southold boys' basketball team.
Walker’s coast-to-coast layup was the winning basket in the First Settlers’ 57-55 League VIII road win over Greenport Saturday.
Walker had previously delivered a game-winning layup with 1.9 seconds left that helped Southold defeat Pierson, 57-55, back on Dec....Read more »
Valley Stream fencing coach Evan Samuelson said he was "worried" before the current season got started.
At the time, it was easy to see why, considering the senior leaders the team lost to graduation.
Now though, it is probably safe to say Samuelson can put his concerns to rest.
Valley Stream District girls fencing is 8-4 and might just be capable of playing spoiler in...Read more »
John Danielo thought his high school athletic career was over last November.
Danielo, a senior who plays football, basketball and baseball at Plainedge, discovered a lump on his right arm several days after taking a hit during a football game. Danielo said it grew so large that it eventually inhibited his ability to make a play on the field.
After getting an MRI, Danielo said the radiologist...Read more »
When Davelle Hooks and Te'Korey Smith attack the glass, Freeport’s tough to beat.
It hasn’t happened as often as Red Devils coach Bob DeBonis would like, but on Tuesday, Hooks and Smith were relentless in their pursuit of the basketball.
That’s the main reason Freeport handed Farmingdale its first loss of the season in the Red Devils’ 49-44 home win in Conference I.
“We’re starting...Read more »
