Josh Hyon admitted he was more mentally exhausted than physically exhausted late in Wheatley’s Nassau Class B semifinal game.
Yet it didn’t prevent him from making the biggest basket in the second-seeded Wildcats’ 72-68 victory over No. 3 East Rockaway Saturday at LIU Post.
Hyon’s putback off his own miss was the winning field goal in the third overtime that gave Wheatley (11-7) a 70-68...Read more »
Terry Harris scored his 1,000 career point on a free throw with 7:18 left in the fourth quarter of No. 7 Half Hollow Hills West's 60-52 Class AA first-round victory over No. 10 Newfield on Friday night.
Harris, who has played on varsity since his sophomore year, finished with a game-high 22 points.
"He got off to a hot start, hitting two three-pointers to start off the game," coach Bill...Read more »
It’s been a grand season of boys basketball for St. John the Baptist, as both of the Cougars’ top players – Tavon Ginyard and Kyle Williams -- crossed the 1,000-point barrier.
Ginyard, a 5-9 junior guard, achieved the milestone on Feb. 7 in a victory over Chaminade. Ginyard wears No. 3 and that’s appropriate as he is Long Island’s top three-point shooter this season with 74. He also leads...Read more »
Greg Gerber needed to thank someone. And he didn't wait.
The Bethpage senior forward scored his 1,000th career point during the fourth quarter of a boys basketball game against Floral Park last Friday. A timeout was called three possessions later to acknowledge the milestone, and Gerber was handed a plaque and a commemorative ball. He didn't hold the ball for long, though.
During the...Read more »
Danny McKee helped his East Hampton teammates move the ball with precision as the final seconds ticked away.
When it stopped moving, McKee stood at the top of the key with the ball in his hands waiting to make his move.
The score was tied at 57 and the Bonackers’ non-league game was on the line.
“We ran our normal offense and ran some time off the clock,” McKee said. “When it got...Read more »
Kyle Williams missed his first dunk attempt, got it back, and went back up for the flush.
What a way for St. John the Baptist’s 6-9 center to score his 1,000th point. It came on the first play of the game in the Cougars’ CHSAA showdown with Holy Trinity.
But it wasn’t the best part for Williams in St. John the Baptist’s 69-64 home win. The best part was protecting the paint.
“I’ve...Read more »
While last season meant despair, dread and disappointment for the Westhampton boys basketball team, this season is all about dreams, delirium and Devonte Dixon.
Dixon, a transfer from Floyd, scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Westhampton Tuesday in its biggest League V victory in quite some time. With the win, Westhampton (6-4) clinched the playoffs for the first time since 2003,...Read more »
Earlier this season, Kellenberg boys basketball coach Jack McCutcheon asked Long Beach coach T.J. Burke how his team was doing.
The reason McCutcheon was reaching out to Burke was because the Marines had been through a lot with superstorm Sandy.
“I told him we got the gym back at Long Beach and we got new uniforms,” Burke said. “But that was about it.”
McCutcheon and the Firebirds...Read more »
A seven-point possession to close the third period sparked Harborfields to a 59-49 victory over Farmingdale in the first game of the Nassau-Suffolk Challenge Sunday at the Hicksville Athletic Center.
Robert Pecorelli hit a driving layup and was fouled, converting the three-point play. Then a Farmingdale player drew a technical foul for bouncing the ball high in frustration. Pecorelli sank...Read more »
John Danielo thought his high school athletic career was over last November.
Danielo, a senior who plays football, basketball and baseball at Plainedge, discovered a lump on his right arm several days after taking a hit during a football game. Danielo said it grew so large that it eventually inhibited his ability to make a play on the field.
After getting an MRI, Danielo said the radiologist...Read more »
