It’s likely the biggest surprise of the season in Suffolk high school boys soccer, and the Central Islip team is hopeful the revelation continues beyond Tuesday afternoon.
For the first time since 1994, according to head coach Johnny Velez, Central Islip won a league title when it clinched the top spot in League II earlier this month. The Musketeers (12-2), a team that hadn’t made the playoffs...Read more »

East Islip junior Billy Wharry entered Monday’s game against Brentwood with moderate expectations.
After all, his team’s opponent was ranked 23rd in the country and hadn’t lost to East Islip since the 2002 playoffs, according to coach Ray Lang.
“I know Brentwood is a great team so I didn’t know how well we’d actually play, to be honest,” said Wharry, a first-year varsity starter, on...Read more »

Already leading 2-0, courtesy of Leslie Aubel’s two-run base hit in the bottom of the second inning, Savanna delivered a grand slam in the third off junior lefthander Julia Simpson to break the game open.
A six-run lead at...Read more »
Is this the year West Islip finally is dethroned?
The Lions, who have won nine straight Suffolk championships in boys lacrosse, and five of the last seven state Class A crowns, have already lost twice, including a rare league defeat to Smithtown East.
The two top contenders in Suffolk League I, for the moment, Ward Melville (6-0) and Smithtown West (7-0), meet Monday at 5 p.m. in a showdown...Read more »
Howdy, lacrosse peoples. I’m going to be out an about covering a boys lacrosse game tomorrow (It doesn’t mean anything! You’re still my main squeeze, girls lacrosse)…so I’m getting a head start on Girls Who Run This World. That’s right: A Special Friday Night Hopped up and Coffee and Imitation Twinkies Edition (it’s a glamorous life we lead). But wait, you say. What about Saturday’s greatness?...Read more »
Well, that was fun.
This week, I got to see the human streak, Sydney Pirreca, in action, and spent half that game being afraid to jot anything down in my notebook, because every time I did, she'd zipped to the other side of the field. Mount Sinai = legitimate, opponents take note. Shoutout to their goalie, Julia Michaels, who's the best quote I've had in awhile (hey, it's the little things)....Read more »
