Chaminade’s Connor Watson entered the season motivated by his loss in the 2013 CHSAA state finals.

Kellenberg’s Jason Javier entered the season with high aspirations but less experience on the big stage.

Both reached their goal on Sunday as the best of the best convened at Chaminade for the CHSAA state championship.

“It’s really all about mental toughness because a lot of these...

Earlier this season, Kellenberg boys basketball coach Jack McCutcheon asked Long Beach coach T.J. Burke how his team was doing.

The reason McCutcheon was reaching out to Burke was because the Marines had been through a lot with superstorm Sandy.

“I told him we got the gym back at Long Beach and we got new uniforms,” Burke said. “But that was about it.”

McCutcheon and the Firebirds...

Durney's MVP performance highlights Kellenberg's tourney win

When the South Side Holiday Tournament rolls around, Ryan Durney can’t wait to step on the hardwood because he gets a chance to return to his hometown and play against his former teammates.

That’s what makes the annual high school basketball classic a memorable one for Durney, Kellenberg’s senior guard, who was named MVP of this year’s event.

“I know how they all play because I grew...

Paige Salmon named CHSAA Player of the Year

The plan was to fool Paige Salmon into thinking she was going to the CHSAA girls soccer championship game to collect a plaque for Kellenberg’s regular season league title. Little did she know she'd actually be receiving the player of the year award.

Problem was, competitor that she is, she didn’t want to go to the game.

“I was pretty upset, she said, “because I wasn’t playing in...

Yet to drop a game to a league opponent all season, St. Anthony’s girls volleyball found itself trailing 15-7 to Kellenberg on Tuesday evening in the first game of the CHSAA championship match.

Coach Donna Newman called timeout, hoping to stem the momentum. It worked, as St. Anthony’s (16-0) rallied in the game and completed a 3-0 sweep to advance to the state championship on Saturday at St....

When Kellenberg’s Emily O’Hara steps on the track, she’s competing in two races. One is the meet at hand – get to the front of the pack and stay there just long enough to cross the finish line with a hefty amount of points. The second is a race against her teammates – a race to make varsity.

O’Hara is currently the top JV runner on the Firebirds. The top seven are granted varsity status, meaning...

"A win in the first race is always nice," coach Eric Visconti said. "St. Anthony's and Monroe Woodbury...

Don’t bother telling St. John the Baptist football players that their aspirations are too high. No one will even pretend to hear you.

Reaching the CHSFL AA title game last season was a significant accomplishment for the Cougars, given the team had been competing at the A level since before Keith Schweers took over as head coach seven seasons ago, and while progressing, still hadn’t been to...

It was only the second day of football tryouts at Kellenberg on Tuesday, but coach Kevin Hanifan had already defined the key to his team’s success — and it’s a line that you’ve heard before.

Football, as they say, is a game won in the trenches, and the Firebirds have a whole new brigade of soldiers fighting for them on the frontline this season.

Kellenberg graduated all five of its starting...
