Deer Park guard Aaren Edmead, a four-year starter and second-team Newsday All-Long Island selection last season, accepted a full scholarship to Division I Wagner College and signed his letter of intent Wednesday.

"He's our Derek Jeter. He's done everything for our program," Deer Park coach John McCaffrey said. "He's never been our leading scorer, but he's always our best player."

Edmead, who scored 11 fourth-quarter points to help Long Island rally for a 119-118 victory over New York City in the Oct. 27 Metro Classic, has led the Falcons to a pair of league championships and an appearance in last winter's Suffolk Class AA title game.

Edmead is the first Falcon to earn a Division I basketball scholarship in 43 years, according to his father, John, and confirmed by McCaffrey. "This is a big deal for us. Aaren is a real favorite here," McCaffrey said. "He's the leader. He's more than a coach on the floor. He's a coach in the hallway, a coach in practice, a coach in the weight room. He can finish my sentences . . . in good ways."
