Newsday runs a full-court press on Long Island high school boys basketball.
Lu-Hi's Ash on the rise
What's fun about Ash Yacoubou is that everyone says he's known for his defense.
In case you were at all wondering, yeah, he's good at all that other stuff, too.
Yacoubou (real first name: Achraf) scored 35 points, with 16 rebounds and five steals to lead Long Island Lutheran over St. Raymond's High School (Bronx), 73-68 in OT. St. Raymond's has been as listed as high as fifth in the nation by ESPN-Rise.
"[He] played an unbelievable game today," said coach John Buck via email. "It was a huge win for our program and a great game to watch." (Aside: extra points to me for not typing 'Joe Buck.'.)
Yacoubou and Terry Brutus (12 points, seven rebounds, four steals) each chipped in four points in overtime. Jordan Allen's free throw with 11 seconds left in regulation tied it at 63 for the Crusaders.
Ash will be playing at Villanova next year, which you'll be able to read aaaaaaall about in next week's preview section.
