High School Boys Basketball
Newsday runs a full-court press on Long Island high school boys basketball.
Early in the season the question on boys hoops fans' minds was: Who is better, St. Mary's or Lutheran?

Can anyone wrestle the Sandler Award away from Long Island Lutheran or its star Achraf Yacoubou? The award, which is given annually to the top player in Nassau and Suffolk, has been given to a LuHi player the last three seasons, including Yacoubou in 2010.
The Villanova-bound guard is off to a hot start for the 11-1 Crusaders, averaging 20.4 points per game.

Long Island Lutheran (20-7): The Crusaders ended the regular season by beating two-time defending Class B Federation champs Collegiate of Manhattan, 89-60, in the finals of the Collegiate tournament on Monday. The Nassau Class AA and A finals on Saturday have been moved to Hofstra from SUNY-Old Westbury to accommodate the ECAC college tournament that will be played at SUNY-Old Westbury on Saturday.

1. Long Island Lutheran (19-7): In their biggest game of the week, the Crusaders trailed powerhouse St. Anthony’s of Jersey City by nine at halftime before losing, 57-32, at home Wednesday. Achraf Yacoubou had 16 points. On Thursday, LuHi won 86-36 over Manhattan Village Academy in the opening round of the Collegiate Invitational. We’re in the thick of the playoffs and a large group of teams that were on the bubble here in past weeks have been eliminated from postseason contention. In Nassau Class AA, only Uniondale, Baldwin, Hempstead and Farmingdale are alive. In Class A, it’s Elmont, Westbury, South Side and Hewlett in the semifinals. Playoffs are underway for the public school teams. Class AA and A quarterfinals will be played this week along with the Class B final, which features Malverne and Locust Valley. The CHSAA regular season is winding down, too, and Chaminade knocked off St. Mary's this week to move up in the rankings.
