Brandon Hepburn drafted by Lions; Trent Steelman, Gilbert Pena and Mike Rios to sign free agent deals
Four Hudson Valley football standouts learned Saturday that they will get their chance in the NFL.
The Detroit Lions used a seventh-round draft pick-- 245th overall -- on Brandon Hepburn, an inside linebacker who played at North Rockland High School and Florida A&M.
After the draft concluded, former Army quarterback Trent Steelman, who projects as a slot receiver in the NFL, agreed to a free agent deal with the world champion Baltimore Ravens. Mississippi defensive tackle Gilbert Pena, who played at Saunders High School in Yonkers, agreed to terms with the Green Bay Packers. And Marist wide receiver Mike Rios signed with the Arizona Cardinals.
“I chose Arizona because I wanted to learn from Larry Fitzgerald, and I feel that their offense fits my skill set,” Rios said in a statement. “Arizona had the most interest in me. I believe I can step in right away and make a difference.”
During the second round of the draft on Friday, the Oakland Raiders selected Florida State offensive tackle Menelik Watson, who played basketball at Marist.
