Yonkers students head to mall to gain valuable career skills
Yonkers Public Schools students soon will be heading to the mall after school, not to seek out the latest fashions but to participate in a new education model.
In an new partnership between the owners of Ridge Hill shopping center and Yonkers Partners in Education, students can take 10 seminars in as many weeks on management careers in the retail and shopping center industry.
Dubbed Ridge Hill Academy, the program will offer 25 students training, seminars and mentors this spring to help them explore careers in the industry from security to style. They'll hear from leaders at the Cheesecake Factory, Lord & Taylor and Whole Foods Market, among many others.
"There's a big disconnect [among students] in terms of visions for the future and what they're doing to get there," said Wendy Nadel of Yonkers Partners in Education. "We called upon business partners in different industries to provide a hands on experience to expose students to what the jobs in the industry are and what kind of education paths you need to obtain them."
The partnership is the outgrowth of a $100,000 donation by Ridge HIll owner Forest City Ratner Cos., which is interested in helping youth develop skills in the retail management field.
The program kicks off Tuesday after a news conference with school and city officials.
