Tuesday’s Nassau Class B semifinal between No. 2 Manhasset and No. 3 Wantagh finished too late to appear in Wednesday’s paper so I wanted to provide some additional detail on what ended up being by far the best game of the day.
The Warriors (15-3) played by far their best game of the season to upset the Indians, 17-11, setting up a rematch with Garden City in the finals. It is the first time...

Suffolk Slant: The Top 10
On the same day that Chaminade lost its first game of the year, St. Anthony’s suffered its second, at the hands of Connecticut power Darien. That opened the door for West Islip to move into a familiar position – the top spot. The Lions’ only loss was by one goal to Chaminade early in the season and they have now won 11 in a row. West Islip wraps up the regular season with winnable games against...
Suffolk Slant: The Top 10
Not exactly a news flash, but West Islip is at it again.
The Lions, who edged Smithtown West, 7-6, on April 19, won another low-scoring thriller against another chief Division I competitor on Thursday. This time it was rival Ward Melville, but the script was different.
The Patriots appeared to be in control, with a 5-1 lead late in the third quarter. But a ramped-up defense and some...

Suffolk Slant: Top 10
I was fortunate enough to cover two terrific overtime games last week. On Wednesday, Comsewogue outlasted Sayville, 10-9, in triple overtime on Tom Hughes’ goal. On Thursday, West Islip rallied against Smithtown West in the final seconds of regulation to force OT on a goal by Nick Aponte, and then Jon Reese scored halfway through the first overtime for a dramatic 7-6 victory.
Those games told...
Suffolk Slant: Top 10
My first blog of the 2012 Suffolk boys lacrosse season is all about early statements.
St. Anthony’s, despite playing without North Carolina-bound goalie Kieran Burke, lost a 6-5 thriller to rival Chaminade but looks to have another deep, balanced team. Backup goalie Eric Caliendo started slow, allowing five first-quarter goals against the Flyers, but recovered to play brilliantly and nearly...
