Suffolk Slant: The Top 10
On the same day that Chaminade lost its first game of the year, St. Anthony’s suffered its second, at the hands of Connecticut power Darien. That opened the door for West Islip to move into a familiar position – the top spot. The Lions’ only loss was by one goal to Chaminade early in the season and they have now won 11 in a row. West Islip wraps up the regular season with winnable games against Lindenhurst and Connetquot and will likely have the top seed when the Suffolk Class A playoffs begin next week. The Lions have won the last eight county titles and may be on a collision course for a rematch with likely No. 2 seed Smithtown West, which has lost its last two games to West Islip in overtime, including last year’s county final.
Individually, Suffolk has the Long Island leaders in all three scoring categories: Sam Llinares (Hauppauge) leads with 90 points, including 48 goals; Zach Sirico (Sayville) is tops with 57 assists, and Matt Chimenti (Whitman) and Matt Beccaris (North Babylon) have the most goals, 51 each.
The biggest game of the final week of the regular season will be played on Thursday night at St. Anthony’s, where the Friars host rival Chaminade, which won the earlier meeting. The teams will undoubtedly meet a third time for the CHSAA championship, a rite of spring around here.
Other games of note, as teams jockey for playoff position, are:
Comsewogue @ Hauppauge, 7 p.m.
Mt. Sinai at Westhampton, 4 p.m.
Smithtown West @ Northport, 4 p.m.
Sachem North @ Smithtown East, 4 p.m.
Ward Melville @ Bay Shore, 4:30 p.m.
Comsewogue @ Bayport-Blue Point, 4 p.m.
Sayville @ Rocky Point, 6:30 p.m.
Eastport-South Manor @ Mt. Sinai, 5:30 p.m.
