Bob Herzog

Bob Herzog has worked in the sports department at Newsday since 1976. He has covered baseball, football and college basketball.

He has edited and written for several award-winning Newsday special sections on baseball, football and Long Island sports history.

Herzog grew up on Long Island, graduated from Commack High School where he was co-captain of the baseball team, and received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Syracuse University.

Below is the Suffolk Class A playoff bracket. Twelve teams make the postseason from Suffolk's Division I, with the top four -- No. 1 West Islip (16-0), No. 2 Ward Melville (15-1), No. 3 Smithtown West (13-3) and No. 4 Sachem North (13-3) -- getting byes to Tuesday's quarterfinal round.

Baldwin Class of 1964 reunion this Saturday

Before Saturday morning's Conference I tilt between Farmingdale (7-1) and Baldwin (5-3), Baldwin's 1964 team will reunite for the first time in 46 years. Gametime is at 10 a.m.

The team will also be honored at halftime.

Vinnie Cesareo, the team's coach who is now 87 and resides in Bethpage, will also be in attendance.

Matt Kavanagh showed off a variety of moves in leading the Flyers to a 9-7 victory over host St. Anthony's in a matchup of the top two teams in the Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA. Chaminade improved to 12-2 with its second victory over the Friars (11-3) this season.

Garden City attack Liam Kennedy looks to pass

With just a little over a week before the Nassau playoffs begin, big shakeups in the top 10, including a new No. 1 -- Garden City.

Comets soaring through Conference I

The Hicksville Comets are skyrocketing up the Conference I standings behind shooting stars Sal Geneva and Joey Leonard.

They have won five straight in the conference after Wednesday's upset at first-place Massapequa. Geneva scored on an assist from Leonard (pictured, left) 3:14 into overtime for the 8-7 win after trailing by four in the fourth quarter.

Islip defeated Sayville, 8-7, in boys lacrosse Tuesday. Alex Gaviria scored on a feed from Joe Sciara with 11:17 left in the fourth to put Islip (9-1) up 8-6 in Division II. Sciara (8-of-13) and Joe Sabbatino (3-of-4) combined to go 11-of-17 on face-off to pace the offense.
