The Suffolk public school playoffs are about to begin – Class A opens Thursday; Class B on Friday; Class C next week. So how about one final set of regular-season rankings. Then Zog’s Blog will take a hiatus from the rankings and let the playoffs unfold. I’ll post a final set of rankings when the state tournaments are over.
The top seeds in each class are West Islip (A),...Read more »
West Islip’s winning streak is now at 36 straight after the Lions rallied in the second half to defeat East Islip, 11-7. West Islip is 15-0 this season and should earn the top seed in the Class A playoffs as it chases its third straight state title. The only other unbeaten team on Long Island remains Comsewogue at 13-0 in Division II (Class B). Smithtown West, after one-goal OT losses to Ward...Read more »
West Islip’s winning streak is at 32 after victories over Ward Melville (a 7-6 overtime thriller) last Wednesday and rallying from an 8-2 victory to defeat stubborn Northport, 11-9.
The Lions face another stern test in ultra-tough Division II on Friday night when they host Smithtown West.
Ward Melville recovered from that heartbreaking loss to post an impressive 14-11 victory over...Read more »
This list could look a whole lot different next week depending on what happens in several key games.
The big one, of course, is Wednesday night’s showdown between West Islip and Ward Melville on the Patriots’ turf at 6:30. Two good defenses might make for a low-scoring game. At the same time, Sachem North hosts Smithtown West in what most likely will be a high-scoring...Read more »
Look who is back on top? And did they ever really leave?
It was a statement week for two-time defending state Class A champion West Islip. First, the Lions defeated Sachem North, the team that handed them its last loss on opening day of the 2010 season. Then West Islip defeated Newsday’s No. 1-ranked team, Chaminade, 8-7, in a defensive battle on Saturday.
In that game, the Lions...Read more »
This is the first of our weekly Suffolk boys lacrosse rankings. Chris Mascaro will post a blog with the Nassau rankings. I’d suggest reading this list quickly because it could change rapidly this week.
There are two huge games on Tuesday that could scramble our poll. No. 1 Ward Melville, which defeated highly ranked Garden City, is at No. 5 Smithtown West and No. 2 West Islip is at No....Read more »
Tom Gordon took a pass from Devin Dwyer and scored 52 seconds into the second overtime as Garden City edged Comsewogue, 9-8, on Tuesday to win its first Long Island Class B championship since 2000.
Gordon, who scored four goals, shot high to the right corner for the game-winner that ended a four-game losing streak for the Trojans in the Long Island championship game. Dwyer had five assists.

West Islip (18-1) vs. Farmingdale (16-2)
Tuesday, Hofstra's Shuart Stadium, 8 p.m.
About Farmingdale: The Dalers are hot, having gone 10-0 in winning the Nassau Conference I title and riding a 14-game winning streak. They like to run and they like to shoot. The offense features the county's No. 6 scorer Sal Tuttle, who has 69 points, including 35 assists, third-best in...Read more »
No major surprises as the Suffolk playoffs roll on. Among the games I think could go either way this week:
East Islip at Connetquot on Tuesday; Chaminade vs. St. Anthony’s on Thursday and Shoreham-Wading River at Hauppauge on Thursday.
Zog’s Top 10
1. West Islip (15-1). The No. 1 seed in Suffolk Class A wrapped up the regular season with a 17-13 victory over Northport...Read more »
