Tuesday’s Nassau Class B semifinal between No. 2 Manhasset and No. 3 Wantagh finished too late to appear in Wednesday’s paper so I wanted to provide some additional detail on what ended up being by far the best game of the day. The Warriors (15-3) played by far their best game of the season to upset the Indians, 17-11, setting up a rematch with Garden City in the finals. It is the first time Manhasset...Read more »
Twelve of the 22 players selected for the Under Armour All American North Team are from Long Island. Of the 12, five are from Suffolk, three from Nassau and four play in the CHSAA (two from Chaminade, two from St. Anthony's). There are four defenders, four middies, two attacks and two goalies. Manhasset coach Bill Cherry will coach the North Team on July 2 when it plays in the sixth...Read more »
It's playoff time, folks. Just 34 Nassau teams remain, vying for county titles in three classifications. Twelve teams are in the Class A bracket, 16 in Class B and six in Class C. There isn't much change in this week's top 10, as the big guns have used their final couple of games as playoff tune-ups. Garden City, which has won a Nassau-best nine straight games, remains in the top spot. During their...Read more »
With just a little over a week before the Nassau playoffs begin, big shakeups in the top 10, including a new No. 1 -- Garden City. Chaminade's 3-2 loss at Manhasset on Saturday night allows Garden City to reclaim the top spot for the first time since late March. As for Chaminade, things don't get any easier, as it will take a trip to St. Anthony's for a rematch with the Friars this afternoon. The...Read more »
The 120th Woodstick Classic is in the books, as Garden City halted Manhasset's 45-game winning streak with a 10-6 win Saturday night. That means West Islip's 32-game winning streak is now the longest active streak on Long Island. And there's no rest for the weary Indians. They've got another big-time Saturday night showdown this weekend against Chaminade, our top-ranked team in Nassau. The...Read more »
Not very many changes to the top 10 this week. Chaminade remains in the top spot, and only movement is Holy Trinity and Wantagh flipping spots. This group has been tough to crack, as the group just outside seems to be doing a great job knocking each other off. First the nitty gritty -- in Gregg Sarra's weekly Big 10, Chaminade remains at No. 4. The Flyers are the...Read more »
Chaminade's reign on top of Long Island lacrosse was short-lived, as the Flyers dropped an 8-7 decision at West Islip on Saturday. But its reign atop Nassau will not end that quickly. After all, there's no shame in losing to a team that has now won 27 straight games. All of the Flyers' goals for this season remain in tact, as they are still the front-runners for the CHSAA title. And despite the...Read more »
So quickly things can change. Garden City came into the season as the rightful owner of the Nassau throne, but has since been unseated by Chaminade, which is off to a phenomenal start. The Trojans' 10-7 loss to Ward Melville, coupled with the Flyers' 10-5 win over rival St. Anthony's, did the trick. Not only is Chaminade the top lacrosse team on the Island, it's also the top team in Gregg Sarra's...Read more »
Here's the penultimate Nassau Top 10 list in advance of Tuesday's LIC games at Hofstra. This is the final week of the season for all teams. The LIC winners advance to the downstate state semifinals on Thursday at Hofstra. State finals are then Saturday at Stony Brook. The road to a state title means playing -- and winning -- three games in five days. Quite a task.
1. Manhasset (17-0):...Read more »
We’ve arrived at county championship week. Manhasset takes on Cold Spring Harbor, Wantagh faces Garden City and Farmingdale plays Massapequa in a tripleheader Wednesday afternoon and night at Hofstra. All three games are rematches of regular season meetings, which were won by Manhasset, Wantagh, and Farmingdale. But this is playoff time. Throw those results out the window.
